Contest
Protocol
LA's
1Minute Monologue Contest is designed to
give actors a
professional venue to perform and showcase their talent in front of
industry professionals in a rather tight time frame.
They'll have 1 Minute.
- Upon
arrival, actors will check in and be assigned a number and
specific
time slot. At that point any unpaid registration fees will be
collected. Only registered and paid up actors will be allowed to
perform.
- Once the actor's number is
called, they're up!
- They'll enter
the performance room and will have 5
seconds from the time the door
shuts to take
their mark and begin their performance. Timers will begin the moment the
actor first speaks. If the monologue doesn't begin within
5 seconds from entering the room,
the timers will start anyway.
- At
the end of
their monologue,
the actor must call "scene".
At that point the timers will stop. If the actor
doesn't call "scene", the timers will stop 3 seconds from the actors
last
bit of dialogue.
- If the actor blunders, messes
up, falls out or needs to
start over, they can do so on their own but the timers will continue
on. In other words...you only get 60 seconds.
Once
the monologue is concluded, actors should exit through the door they
originally entered. And...that will be it! This
happens fast, so you'll
need to be prepared.
Results are scheduled to be posted in our Studio Newsletter and on our
website as soon as all the judges votes are in. This is projected to
happen by the end of October but no later than November 15. www.ClayBanksProductions.com
Rules:
In keeping things as fair as possible, the
contest will take into consideration all SAG and
Non-SAG Actors. Each registered actor must state which category they
qualify for. SAG Eligible is Non-SAG. In the event that any 'winning'
actor mis-registers, they
will be disqualified from the competition and the ranks will advance
up. Categories will be judged separately and
contest results will
be combined to one
winner's list and one 1st place winner.
(Disqualification
will result in forfeiture of all registration fees.)
There's
a $15 entrance fee due upon registration to help cover the costs
of the contest. Actors can register and pay right here, right now
through this website by hitting the 'Cart' button, or, mail in
their checks and registration form to our mailing address
below. Registration and payment are done
separately. Registration and
fee may also be paid at
the door, but a slot cannot be guaranteed. Registration
is done online at: www.1MinuteMonologue.com
Send your check to:
Clay
Banks Productions, 137 N Larchmont Blvd #242, LA, CA 90004)
(Please note the contest's
physical address and mailing address are different. Mailing address is
above.)
*IMPORTANT:
Actors
will have 60 seconds to showcase their monologues. They will sign in,
be assigned a time slot and informed of any schedule changes.
The
sooner you're registered, the better your chance of picking your own
time slot.
Contest start time 10/9/10 - 11:00am
End time secheduled at - 4:00pm
So
hurry up and register to better your chance of picking your own time
slot!
In the event of no-shows or late
arrivals, that slot will be given to
the next scheduled actor. If /when the late actor shows up, they will
be placed at the end of the day's scheduled performances. Because
of no-shows and late arrivals, actors should show up earlier than their
scheduled time.
(Factor
in LA traffic.)
Performances will be scored by category on a point system, (see below.)
Each judge will complete a point/comment card along with any additional
comments they may have to assist the actor with future performances. Only the top five actors
will receive written personal evaluation.
Actors
may participate and perform more than one monologue by
registering each monologue (by monologue name)
and paying the $15 registration fee for each monologue
showcased.
Actors are limited to a maximum of TWO performed monologues that may be
performed but not consecutively. We advise that you
spread the time slots out. There are no refunds once
registered.
Results and prize awards
are final and
will be posted on our website as well as listed in Clay Banks Studio Newsletter
which
will be sent out to all registrars.
We
plan to release final notices in October but no later than November 15,
although due to our
industry professional's schedules, this date may change a bit.
Agents,
Managers, Producers, Directors and/or Casting Directors
may call to arrange a meeting with
you at any time. Although this is a good thing...as a professional
courtesy, we ask that you please
refrain from contacting them directly.
(Due
to scheduling conflicts and in order to protect privacy, some judges
have asked and will remain anonymous and judging will be done via
recorded performances.)
Judging:
Performances
will be judged in the following categories:
APPROACH: First
impression - How the actor comes out of the gate - Opening
moment
DELIVERY: Use of space (the
'where') - Body Language
CONTENT: Overall
performance value - Beginning,
Middle, End - Continuity - Emotional Journey
CONFIDENCE: How well do you OWN the moments?
BELIEVABILITY & FIT: How well does
the monologue fit you?: How believable are you?
TIME: Flow
- How well is the performance 'time managed'? Does it seemed rushed or
too short?
3 separate
timers will time monologues. The times will be compared,
totaled and divided by
three. The result will be the most accurate time and that will be the
actor's final time.
The actor who executes their monologue closest to 1 minute will score
the highest 'time' points.
A safe
zone between :55 & 1:05 seconds will be granted where no points
will be deducted.
For every second outside of this time, points will be deducted. Any
monologue ending 15 seconds early or 15 seconds late will be
disqualified. In other words...your monologue must be no shorter than
45 seconds and no longer than 75 seconds. All actor performances
longer than 75 seconds will be stopped.
(This
can be an awkward moment so please rehearse and hone in your
performance.)
Execution:
- Enter performance room when
your number is called.
- You may begin your monologue
whenever you'd like
although the
timers will begin when you first speak or 5 seconds from the time the
door is shut, whichever comes first.
- There will be tape on the
floor in the
center of the room if you'd like to take your mark. A camera recording
your performance will be in front of the mark.
- There will also be a chair and
stool available for you - your option if needed.
- You may play to anyone or any
space in
the room including the camera. There will be several cameras recording
you but consider the one directly in front of you.
- Timers will stop when
you call "SCENE'" or 5 seconds after your dialogue ends, whichever
comes first.
- Your performance is now over
and you may exit through the door you entered.
PLEASE
NOTE: All actor performances
longer than 75 seconds will be stopped.
Tips:
- DON'T
RUSH YOUR PERFORMANCE! Edit your monologue down to
about :50 seconds.
This will give it room to 'breath' in full-blown execution.
- READ
ALL OF THE ABOVE -- PROTOCOL - RULES - EXECUTION & TIPS.
Information is power!
- BE
PREPARED. You don't want to have a bunch of
questions going into your performance.
- BE
READY. This all happens very fast!
- KEEP
FOCUSED. Save all of the 'actor chat' for after you're
done and back outside. Consider the other actors.
- IF
YOU MESS UP, KEEP GOING! The timers will!
- OWN
THE MOMENT. Literally, it's your time, your chance to
perform, we want you to be brilliant!
- BE
ON TIME, BE BRIGHT, BE BRIEF, BE GONE! Know what you're
doing and do it with confidence.
- HAVE
FUN! Or at least look like it...
- ENJOY
YOUR WORK. Make it a 'full' experience...remember, this
is not a dress rehearsal!
Disclaimers & Conditions:
All
results are final, unless a winning actor is disqualified. In that case
all qualifying actors will advance up in position...similar to the
Olympics. (Disqualification
will result in forfeiture of all registration fees.) Registration
fees are non-refundable...even if you mess-up or don't show. By
'checking' the
registration form, during your participation in the 1Minute Monologue
Contest, you are releasing Clay Banks, Clay Banks Productions &
Studio, Jeremiah Comey & Studio and all
personnel from any and all liability. You understand that you will be
taped and photographed and you will be asked to sign a waiver releasing
your performance and likeness to Clay Banks Productions. Clay Banks
Productions will
not
take ownership of the performances or any of the written material, but
will be granted full usage and legal rights of any and all performances
and images for promotional purposes such as website, advertising
materials, clips, etc....in other words, more exposure for you. You
agree not to try and
contact any of the judges or studio personnel personally. Judges will
contact you directly if they are interested in meeting with you and at
that time you understand that Clay Banks Productions will release your
contact details to them. Your contact details will remain confidential
and will only be used to contact you with contest and studio news,
results and updates. All prizes must be claimed by January 31, 2011 or
they will be forfeited. All rights reserved.
